About the drop test:

Under a brilliant early morning Arizona sky, NASA conducted a successful, record-breaking test of a drogue parachute being designed to return next-generation space vehicles safely to Earth. The 77,000-pound payload used in the test was dropped from the back of a U.S. Air Force C-17 at an altitude of 25,000 feet, setting a record for the heaviest single load ever extracted out of a C-17 during flight. NASA conducted the drop test, April 14, at the U.S. Army’s Yuma Proving Ground near Yuma, Ariz.

Boycott Israeli Goods

WREXHAM PEACE & JUSTICE FORUM

PRESS RELEASE

Saturday 15th July

SHOPPERS URGED TO HELP END APARTHEID BY BOYCOTTING ISRAELI GOODS

Members of Wrexham Peace & Justice Forum were in Wrexham town centre (outside Millets) this morning from 10am with a stall drawing attention to the desperate plight of the Palestinian people and urging a comprehensive boycott of Israeli goods.

A spokesperson for WPJF, said:

"For many years, Palestinians have suffered illegal occupation of their lands, discriminatory practices and extreme hardship at the hands of the Israelis. Israel has stolen Palestinian lands and water supplies, operates an Apartheid regime, and is constructing an Apartheid wall which separates many Palestinians from their land and livelihoods, their schools, shops and hospitals. Israeli soldiers shut gates in the wall at whim, or force Palestinians to queue for hours at checkpoints to reach their farms, jobs, schools and essential services.

"Israel has launched a large-scale military operation against Gaza, one of the most densely populated and poorest areas. This has terrorised the civilian population, killed whole families, destroyed the only power station and the main bridges, and has created a humanitarian crisis with desperate shortages of food, water and basic medical supplies.

"In the last few days, the Palestinian Ministry of Health has reported that explosives containing toxins and radioactive materials have been used by the Israelis in their attacks on Gaza. These have caused horrific injuries, burning and tearing the victim’s body from the inside, leaving long-term deformations or giving surgeons no alternative but to amputate limbs. I am sickened to learn that the Israelis call their offensive ‘Operation Summer Rains’. Britain invaded Iraq on the basis of chemical weapons that were never used because they didn’t exist. I would like to ask how we can now remain silent and do nothing when Israel not only possesses these weapons, but is using them to attack civilians. This is a war crime.

"We have been encouraging shoppers to bring pressure to bear on the Israeli government by boycotting all Israeli goods, and asking them to write and tell their shops and supermarkets what they are doing and why. The boycott of South African goods helped to bring down the Apartheid regime there; this boycott could do the same in Israel."

More fire equipment that was funded by federal grants from FEMA. This kind of gear helps Fairfax County, Va., firefighters be prepared for any kind of emergency, including terrorist attacks with chemicals, biological agents, or radioactive materials.

Adorable car out on the street last night equipped with HAND hubcaps and Hagar illustration. The hood was adorned with a cartoon cat and the other side had Snoopy. The gas cap was an icon for radioactive material. :) Very cute.

Whiteboard sketch about an integrated strategy including online channels, web site, analytics, crm, feedback and recommendations.

This Online Feedback Strategy Map is made for printshops, the basic structure could be used for any other business.

The key element of the strategy is the "Electronic Line Of Visibility (eLOV)". The "Line Of Visibility" is a strategy to describe the areas of contact with customers. eLOV is the same for online communication, following the idea to close the feedback loops between customers and businesses.

Inspired by the Contact 2.0 Strategy by Marc Keating, Chris Brogans Trust Agents and Thomas Scheuer’s Marketing für Dienstleister.

Can I just say that this is the coolest thing ever created using the Google Maps API?!

At first you would think that this was Simcity but it’s not. This is a map of Hong Kong in its full 3d glory. I had wished for something like this for a long time but I was surprised to see that the Chinese developers did it first. Kudos!!!

A quick code sketch that creates a *fog of war* style map. Experimenting with alternative, messy, partial perspectives and points of view. Incomplete maps to encourage exploring new terrains. Etc. I wonder how badly this voids the implicit Terms of Service for using Google maps..

Everybody wants to know how I made the maps! First, I went to www.randmcnally.com target= to generate some maps of the area. I had three locations I wanted to put on the maps, and when I zoomed out enough to fit them all in one map, I lost a lot of detail, i.e. the smaller streets disappeared. So I zoomed back in to the level of detail I wanted, and used the arrow buttons to pan around the area, saving each map to my desktop as I went. I ended up with about nine map jpgs, which I pasted together in photoshop to make one large detailed map with all of my locations on it. Then I printed it out and used a graphics tablet to trace the streets I wanted into Adobe Illustrator. (I know that not everyone is lucky enough to have access to a Adobe Illustrator and a graphics tablet – the same could be accomplished by opening the map image in Illustrator or Powerpoint and using the mouse to trace over the streets. Then delete the map image from underneath.) Anyway, then I added color, text labels, and little icons. The little icons, including the compass, are symbol fonts from www.dafont.com. The map cards were also printed professionally by the same place that did the invites on glossy white cardstock. (It seems Google Maps has similar text labels on their maps, but I made mine before they were around, I swear. (This was 2004 remember? I am still waiting on my royalty check 😉

Lego – Set 10231 Space Shuttle Expedition

Lego – Set 10231 Space Shuttle Expedition
Space Shuttle

Set 10231, released in 2011, portrays a Space Shuttle based on the NASA Space Shuttle system, and is an update of Set 10213, Space Shuttle Adventure first released in 2010, with minor detail changes for more stability. I ordered this set during a special Lego promotion, shortly after photographing Space Shuttle Endeavour for real.

This set uses a fictional name, Expedition, as it is not an official NASA-licensed set, unlike some past Lego space shuttles.

Technic components, including a spring-loaded piece, are used to construct the landing gear. Here is a detail of the main landing gear in place. The spring allows the gear to be locked into position.

The Space Shuttle Enterprise was the first Space Shuttle orbiter built for NASA. It is a full-scale test vehicle used for flights in the atmosphere and tests on the ground. It has no propulsion system, and only has simulated thermal tiles because that was all that was necessary for atmospheric and ground tests.

Space Shuttle Era: Crawler Transporter

Space Shuttle Era: Crawler Transporter

For more than 40 years, the twin crawler-transporters at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center have slowly traveled the gravel track between the massive Vehicle Assembly Building and the two launch pads at Launch Complex 39. These mammoth beasts that first carried all the Apollo Saturn V rockets have since borne every space shuttle on the last Earth-bound leg of their journeys to space.
