We received information this AM by email that the space shuttle would be flying over the county where I teach around 12:30 to 1:00 PM. The school was allowed to go outside and watch and listen. We believe that we saw an escort plane and the shuttle. We also heard the sonic boom.

This is at the new exhibit at Kennedy Space Center that opened a few days ago. It’s displayed as if in orbit, with the cargo bay doors open, a satellite in the bay and the robot arm deployed.

Note: This is a creative commons image. You can view / download it for personal use in full resolution (~80MP).

The Space Shuttle Discovery’s final flight: a journey over DC on 17 April 2012, part of the retirement of the Shuttle program which entails DC receiving Discovery and our current Enterprise (a prototype which never flew into space) to be transferred to NYC in a couple months.

It was EPIC. I’ve never seen so many people on the rooftops of DC. I managed to fall as I sprinted from the east to west side of the Washington Monument, but did a perfect roll and came up kneeling & shooting photos… I felt very deft, other than the tripping in the first place.

Also, if NASA equipped that fighter pilot with a camera I will send them a paycheck.

Beginning Oct. 30, the shuttle will be on display in the CSC’s Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Endeavour Display Pavilion, embarking on its new mission to commemorate past achievements in space and educate and inspire future generations of explorers. The Space Shuttle Enterprise was the first Space Shuttle orbiter built for NASA. It is a full-scale test vehicle used for flights in the atmosphere and tests on the ground. It has no propulsion system, and only has simulated thermal tiles because that was all that was necessary for atmospheric and ground tests.
